5 Ways to Stop Being Fat, Sick, and Unhappy

”I don’t know what has happened! Ever since I hit menopause my waist has disappeared, my energy has hit an all-time low, and my libido has completely disappeared. Help! I hate myself and am honestly afraid that if I don’t turn things around soon I am going to destroy my marriage."

I recently received this email from a client asking me for pointers on how to lose weight. She was obviously feeling quite discouraged as are many in the post-menopausal phase of life, so today we are going to talk about the 5 things you can start doing today to go from being fat, sick, and unhappy to thin, healthy, and vibrantly energetic over the next 6 months.

  1. Get rid of all of the unhealthy food in your house. Right now! And I don’t mean eat it. Box it up and drive it over to your local soup kitchen, or if it is open packages take it out to the trashcan.I have had clients in the past tell me that they can’t get rid of all the “good stuff” in their house because their husband or kids will get mad. First of all, if you are considering that box of chemicals or bag of processed junk to be the good stuff, then you will be in for a wonderful treat of quick weight loss as you learn to love healthy food. My brother-in-law recently stopped drinking soda and started drinking more water. He has lost 20 pounds in about 5 weeks from that one small adjustment.
  2. Stop dieting. Right now! The entire belief behind dieting is based in depriving yourself…and who in the world wants to spend their entire life feeling deprived? Not me!!!It is much more beneficial to find out what it is that your body loves and thrives on and eat that! My body operates the best on a plant-based diet. I know that because I have experimented with just about every eating plan known to man, and this is the only one that gives me the strength, energy, and vibrant health that I want. The experiment I would suggest is to go on a fast for as long as you can (not more than 3 days to start) and then break your fast with watermelon. The next day add in oranges. The following day add in lettuce. Continue to add in vegetables and fruits for the next two weeks, noticing which ones help you feel more vibrant and alive, and which ones make you feel bloated and tired. Permanently eliminate anything that doesn’t make you feel great. After two weeks you can begin to experiment with different grains, then dairy products, and meats. Within a short time you will find the ideal diet for your body, and you will see the number on the scale going down!
  3.  Move that body for 30 minutes daily. Start today! It doesn’t matter if you put on your favorite dance music and whirl around your living room, or hit up a yoga class, or venture into the gym, or take a walk around your neighborhood. Just do something!It’s not even just about the cardiovascular benefits (which are wonderful!) but the reduction of stress that exercise provides that will support you in living a healthier lifestyle. You have heard of the fight or flight response, right? When we were cavepeople, if we saw a saber tooth tiger our hearts would start racing, our breath would get short and shallow, and all of our blood flow would rush to our arms and legs. Why? So we could either run or fight, that’s why! And the same thing happens today…but our stressors look more like an irate boss, or an uncooperative kid, or too many bills and not enough money instead of a saber tooth tiger. I don’t know about you but most people who are carrying around excess weight are stress eaters. By getting in the habit of moving your body for 30 minutes daily you are burning off the stress and saving yourself a lot of unnecessary calories.
  4.  Drink more water. Starting now! The body needs approximately ½ of your weight in ounces of water daily. If you weigh 150lbs. that would be 75 ounces of water every day.  Do the math and figure out how much your body needs.Now I don’t want you to start drinking the full amount immediately unless you are already pretty close to your goal. Instead I’d like you to slowly build towards it over the next couple of weeks by adding 8-10 ounces every 24-36 hours. That way you will slowly build up and reach your goal. After a few days you will actually feel your body begin to crave more and more water as it moves out of its dehydrated state and in to a detoxifying state. As the body’s ability to detoxify strengthens, you will see the number on the scale to continue to move downward.
  5.  Stay focused on WHY you want to reach your goal weight. Always! You will still have stressful days, or moments when you decide to indulge in something delicious that is not necessarily on your healthy foods list. The one way to be certain that you won’t let those challenges stop you is to be very clear about your why for living a healthy lifestyle.My client who you read about earlier is obviously very concerned about destroying her marriage. Her why is to have a happy healthy relationship with her husband.
